What’s in Óbidos?

The origin of Óbidos

 

 

 

“Óbidos” is Latinized (oppidum, citadel). The municipality had its growth from a Roman settlement near the foothills of an elevated escarpment. The region of Óbidos, extending from the Atlantic to the interior along the rivers and lakes has been inhabited since the late Paleolithic.

Archeological evidence from the base of the medieval tower at Óbidos Castle indicates Roman construction linked to an outpost of the Roman city of Eburobrittium. A large urban area that has been under excavation. Archeological surveys found the remains of many other Roman structures near the settlement.

What’s in Nazare?

 

Nazaré (Portuguese for Nazareth) is one of the Portugal’s most picturesque fishing village, although its days as a traditional place are long gone. Everybody is talking about the Nazare´s big waves, although it is only happening between October and January.

Located in the center of the country, less than 90 minutes north of Lisbon, it hasn’t lost its laid-back ambience. Aveiro and Costa Nova

 

Aveiro and Costa Nova: coastal and flat towns near the ocean. Crossed by a network of channels through which local boats meander.

Tourists can sail through them in the typical boats of the locality, named as moliceiros. The moliceiro navigates lagoons and the marcantel navigates canals transporting salts and goods.

In fact, real ovos moles can only be made in Aveiro.  Since 2008 this delicacy is classified as a product with Protected Geographical Indication by the European Union – the first Portuguese bakery product to get this classification.

The pastry grew in popularity when women wearing traditional Aveiro costume started selling them at the Aveiro train station on the Lisbon to Porto train line.

Recipes of ovos moles were passed down from generation to generation until, somewhere along the way, decided to set up a business selling them. That’s the case with the custard tarts -pasteis de nata- and it’s also the case with ovos moles.
